What We Love About Life in Westcliffe
We are close to nature here because it is all around us. It is beautiful - unbelievably so - but a different lifestyle, but one we know and love and want to share with you.

Some things we prefer:
  • to see cattle grazing in the fields rather than tall buildings
  • to see the changing of the seasons
  • the first snow on the peaks
  • the new calves being born in the spring
  • the haying on our valley floor that starts in summer and continues through fall
  • the incredible wild flowers that change from year to year depending on our snowfall
  • our parades filled with horses (our county population 4200 - 4400 and horse population is 16,000 4/1).

REMEMBERING 2015 IN WESTCLIFFE COLORADO
Two events last year that stand out in my mind - Ride The Rockies with its finish line at the end of Main Street & Westcliffe becoming the 9th Dark Sky Community in the World. Not sure when I've been so proud of our community and the volunteers who made both of these events happen. I was in and out of tears all day with Ride The Rockies. And many of the riders were the same as the came across the finish line - totally amazed at the tremendous welcome that our little community was giving them.

When we purchased here 20 years ago there was a sign at the edge of Silver Cliff that read "WELCOME TO THE FRIENDLIEST LITTLE COMMUNITY IN COLORADO". Even though the sign is gone, the sentiment still runs strong and true as ever.

Six Biggest Home Buying Mistakes In Our Market
If you're currently in the market for a new home or even just considering it, please take a minute and review the below list of commonly made mistakes by home buyers in their search for their mountain home. Please feel free to contact Mattie at 719-783-4888 or mattie@mattieburtt.com with any questions you may have. Have a great day!

SIX BIGGEST HOME BUYING MISTAKES IN OUR MARKET

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT HOME:  It may not exist. Our mountain real estate market is very different than a metropolitan area. Most of our homes are unique because they were built either as a vacation home or retirement home and both are built specifically for those owners. We suggest making a list of your top 10 wishes for a home here in the mountains and if you find a home with at least five of these wishes, take note. And if a home you see has seven or more, give it serious consideration.

FAILURE TO CONSIDER REMODELING:  Our happiest buyers select a home in the location they want and then plan to either add additional square footage or remodel to make the home fit their needs.

NOT UNDERSTANDING MOUNTAIN AND RURAL LIVING:  It is important to gain as much knowledge of the area as possible. Knowledge is power and too much never interferes with a correct purchasing decision.

TRYING TO OBTAIN THE LOWEST PRICE:  There is a premium added to home prices here because of where we are. Our spectacular scenic beauty, small town living, no air pollution, no noise pollution, no light pollution of our night skies, no traffic congestion, national forest all around us and abundant wildlife - all add to the desirability of our homes here. If you decide to buy in the mountains, don’t expect city prices.

THINKING YOU CAN BUILD FOR LESS $ THAN YOU CAN BUY:  Check very carefully on this. Mountain living, while wonderful, has its costs and building a home (more often than not) results in a much higher price than what you could have paid for an existing home of comparable square footage. Building costs are higher here than building in the metropolitan areas. If you must build your perfect dream home then pay very close attention to your budget.

NOT BUYING AT ALL:  Our prices are not going down. Interest rates are staying strong. If, after thorough investigation, you feel mountain living is for you then there is not time like the present.
